In the heart of Daytona Beach, where the salt air meets the roar of the engines, certain names just feel like part of the foundation. They are the individuals who don’t just live in a community; they help build it.

Recently, Funcoast Sports had the privilege of sitting down with one of those foundational pillars: Jeff Gillis, known to many as Sugar Bear. If you’ve spent any time around the local sports scene, Mainland High School, or the campus of Daytona State College (DSC) over the last few decades, you’ve likely seen his smile or felt his energy. As part of our "Shaping Our Future" series, we’re diving into the journey of a man who proves that a legacy isn’t just about the points on a scoreboard—it’s about the lives you lift along the way.
The Kid Who Just Wanted to Play
Jeff is a "Daytona Original." A graduate of Spruce Creek High School, he grew up with a ball in his hand or the track field under his feet. He was a traditional multi-sport athlete: football, basketball, baseball, shotput, and discus.
But there was a catch. Every athlete has a hurdle, and Jeff’s was a classic one: Mom. Fearing for his safety, his mother initially put a firm "no" on football. Seeking an outlet for his competitive drive, Jeff added a tennis racket to his tool bag while he was a student at Campbell Junior High, but his heart was always on the gridiron.
"One of the happiest days of my life," Jeff recalls with a laugh, "was when my mom finally allowed me to play football in high school." That joy—the pure, unadulterated love for the game—is something Jeff has never lost, and it’s the same fire he looks for in the athletes he mentors today.
From Central Receiving to the Heart of the Campus
Jeff’s professional journey is a masterclass in loyalty and evolution. He started at Daytona State College ( when it was still Daytona Beach Community College) in Central Receiving, a position he held for 37 years. While he was managing the logistics of the college, his heart was moving toward the people. His transition into mentoring wasn’t an accident; it was a calling. When the Accomplish Mentoring program began, Jeff stepped up to coordinate and recruit mentors for students. His impact was so immediate that the vice principal took notice. Soon, Jeff was invited to join the athletic program to help mentor student-athletes directly.
Today, Jeff is one of Daytona’s best ambassadors. Whether he’s showing a high-school recruit around the DSC campus or "selling" them on the beauty and opportunity within the City of Daytona Beach, his pitch is authentic. Why? Because he’s lived it.
"It’s Never Too Late": The 51-Year-Old Graduate
Jeff doesn’t just talk the talk when it comes to education; he walked the walk—literally across the graduation stage. While working at DSC, Jeff earned his Associate’s degree. He could have stopped there, but his sister (who also works at the college) had other plans. In a move only a sibling could pull off, she made an unannounced visit and dropped off a class schedule for a Bachelor’s degree program. Then, in classic sibling rivalry fashion, he brought the debate to their mother. "She challenged me," Jeff says. "She asked for one good reason why I couldn't do it." He couldn’t find one. So, at 51 years old, Jeff Gillis completed his Bachelor’s degree. Now, when he looks a struggling 19-year-old athlete in the eye and says, "It’s never too late," they know he means it. He is a walking reminder that your timeline is yours alone, and the only person you’re truly competing against is the version of yourself from yesterday.
Surrounded by Champions
If you want to know what success looks like, Jeff is a good person to ask. He’s been in the room where it happens for a long time. He was with Daytona State when they clinched their first JUCO state championship back in 1992. He was a coach with the football and basketball teams at high school powerhouse Mainland from 1996 to 2000. The Bucs boys basketball team was on the back-end of back-to-back State Titles in 1996. In 1998, the football team earned a trip to the FHSAA Final Four
Since 2003, the accolades at DSC have been staggering:
13 National Titles (including a dominant 11 for the Golf program and 2 for Soccer).
State Titles across the board: Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Soccer, and Softball.
"I’m surrounded by champions," Jeff says, his eyes lighting up. "So, you have to have a champion's spirit."
But to Jeff, that spirit isn’t just about the rings or the trophies. It’s about the work done in the dark, the character built during the losses, and the wisdom to know that the sport is a vehicle, not the destination.
The Gospel of Growth
Beyond the sidelines, Jeff serves his community as a licensed minister and the Advisor for the Young Adult Ministry at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. His faith and his coaching philosophy are inextricably linked. He’s coached under some of the greats—Ray Ridenour, Frank Burnell, and Brad Underwood (the current head coach at the University of Illinois). From them, he learned the X’s and O’s, but from his own life, he learned the "Why."
His advice to the youth is simple but profound: "The sport is in you... because you love it. So you’re going to play. But you’ve got to love life just a little bit more."
He pushes every athlete he meets to use their sport to get their education. He knows that the "Pro" dream is rare, but the "Success" dream is available to everyone with a degree and a work ethic. Whether it’s at the prestigious Bethune-Cookman University or his beloved Daytona State, Jeff’s mission is to see young people prepared for the "game" that starts after the final whistle of their athletic careers.
A Final Word
Today, if you visit Daytona State, you might find Jeff talking to a student who just needs to vent or guiding a newcomer through the halls. He loves his position, and the feeling is mutual across the campus.
Jeff Gillis is more than a mentor; he’s a bridge. He connects Daytona’s past with its future, the "Central Receiving" grind with "National Championship" glory, and the athlete's heart with the scholar's mind.
As we look toward "Shaping Our Future," we couldn't ask for a better blueprint than the life of Jeff Gillis. Remember his words next time you're facing a challenge: It’s never too late, and always keep that champion’s spirit.
(Shortly after this interview, the Golf team went on to capture the 14th national title for the school (just as Jeff predicted during our interview)—marking an incredible 12th national championship for the golf program.)
