Bass & JCSU Make History

Updated: Dec 6, 2025

Trae Bass and JCSU Break 55-Year Drought on Way to NCAA Playoffs

For the first time in over half a century, the Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) Golden Bulls are the Kings of the CIAA. And right in the middle of this history-making defense is Daytona Beach’s very own Latrae "Trae" Bass.

The former Seabreeze Sandcrab is wrapping up his senior season in the most spectacular way possible: with a ring on his finger and a ticket to the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

🏆 A Historic Achievement

You have to go back 55 years to find the last time JCSU held the conference trophy. But this year, the Golden Bulls refused to be denied. By dominating the season, they haven't just secured the championship; they have earned the #2 Seed in Super Region 2.

This means the road to the title runs through Charlotte. JCSU is set to host Frostburg State University in what promises to be an electric atmosphere.

🔒 The Lockdown Defender: Trae Bass

Trae Bass isn't just along for the ride; he was making an impact. As a Defensive Back, he has been instrumental in shutting down opposing offenses when it matters most.

Recent Highlights:

The Career Game: In the heated rivalry game against Winston-Salem State University, Bass was everywhere. He recorded a career-high 8 solo tackles, including 2 tackles for loss, proving he can play in the backfield just as well as coverage.

The Championship Shift: Big time players make big plays in big games. In the CIAA Championship against Virginia Union, Bass grabbed a massive, momentum-shifting interception in the 1st Quarter. That turnover set the tone early: JCSU was here to win.

🦀 The Daytona Connection

Local fans in Daytona Beach know that this success has been a long time coming. Bass honed his skills at Seabreeze High School, playing under the tutelage of head coach Pat Brown.

It’s a testament to the talent pipeline in the 386 area code. While Bass is making waves in Charlotte, his former high school coach, Pat Brown, has continued his own ascent, currently serving as an assistant coach at Bethune-Cookman University. From the Sandcrabs to the Golden Bulls, the foundation built at Seabreeze is holding strong on the national stage.
